A teenager who escaped from custody Thursday surrendered to the Chatham County sheriff's deputies early Saturday.

Kabem Smith, 16, escaped from a deputy who was trying to arrest him Thursday morning. Smith, who was already handcuffed, turned and ran, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

A search centered on Old U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 1 forced Moncure School to go into lockdown for part of the day.

Officials did not disclose the original reason Smith was arrested, because he is a juvenile.
