Lumberton, N.C. — Robeson County deputies said that a Lumberton man who led them on a chase through two counties had kidnapped a second man in the truck at gunpoint.
Ronnie Sampson, 35, of Narcissus Drive, hitched a ride with Charles Rogers, a volunteer firefighter, after his car broke down on Pine Log Road. He stole a handgun from Roger's car after the ride, deputies said.
Sampson next thumbed down Shawn Dale Jacobs, 32, who was driving a pickup truck that belonged to Prevatte Auto Parts in Lumberton. Investigators believe that Sampson pulled a gun on Jacobs and ordered him to drive.
A Robeson County deputy pursued the pickup truck onto N.C. Highway 211, where two state Highway Patrol troopers took over.
In Rennert, the pickup truck clipped the back of a deputy's car, but the deputy was not seriously injured, officials said.
The chased covered N.C. Highway 71 and N.C. 211 in Hoke County before Jacobs crashed into a ditch in Raeford.
Jacobs was uninjured and will not face any charges, deputies said. He was wearing a seat belt.
Sampson was treated for minor injuries at the Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He had not been wearing a seat belt, deputies said.
Sampson faces charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, stealing a gun and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was being held on a $150,000 bond at the Robeson County jail Thursday night.
