A local couple has been arrested in connection with a string of vehicles broken into across Sanford, police said Wednesday.

James Polito, 23, of 401 Oakwood Ave., and Justine Murphy, 21, of 215 S. Fourth St., were each charged with 38 counts of felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, 39 counts of larceny, 39 counts of possession of stolen goods, two counts of breaking and entering of a coin-operated machine, one count of felony larceny and one count of felony possession of stolen goods.

Polito was released from the Lee County Jail in January, and the break-ins started shortly after that, said Capt. David Smith, of the Sanford Police Department.

Polito was being held in the jail on a $96,000 secured bond, and Murphy was being held on a $39,000 secured bond.
