Inmates to Step Up Litter Collection

Raleigh, N.C. — Crews of prison inmates will expand efforts to clear trash from the sides of Raleigh highways, an official said Tuesday.

Brandon Jones, division maintenance engineer for the state Department of Transportation, said the state Department of Correction would have three or four inmate crews picking up roadside litter four days a week.

Prison officials suspended the use of inmate crews last July after an inmate was killed along Interstate 40. The DOT and DOC reinstated the practice last week after agreeing to measures to improve safety.

Since last Monday, crews have picked up 1,000 bags of trash along I-40, Jones said. The crews are expected to finish the stretch of I-40 in Wake County next week before moving to Interstate 540, U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 64, he said.

Clearing all Wake County highways will take about two months, he said.

There is nothing wrong with Inmates doing this type of work. I think all but the most dangerous inmates should be required to do this type of work all over the state to help pay for they upkeep! WHy should I as a tax[ayer have to pay for their upkeep and crime.

It's constuction trash, I see them all the time not covered and trash blowing out, also I am tired of my car being beat to death with rocks when I get behind one hauling dirt.

Help stop trashing our highways and roads. If you see someone throwing out trash or blowing off a vehicle get the license number, location,and time and report it to the highway patrol.

I'm very happy to hear that the trash will be picked up! It is awful how much trash accumulates along side the roads. I will admit it was intimidating when I first moved to the area 5 years ago and saw the prison vans parked along I-40. Now I welcome that sight.
