Fort Bragg, N.C. — An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper was found dead at Fort Bragg late Sunday, authorities said Tuesday.
Sgt. Matthew J. Rhoads, 29, of Philadelphia, served as small-arms master gunner in the 1st Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. The cause of his death remains under investigation.
Rhoads, who has been assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division since October 2004, served a seven-month deployment in Iraq from August 2006 to February 2007.
He is survived by his father, Gerald Rhoads; his mother, Karen Rhoads; his brother, Justin Rhoads; and his sister, Jennifer Rhoads, all of Philadelphia.
