The Chapel Hill Police Department bid farewell to a K9 officer who had been with the force for five years.

Early Friday, K9 "KC" began experiencing breath difficulties, and veterinarians found that KC was in the late stages of cancer. The seven-year-old German Shepherd had to be put down.

The Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill donated the funds to purchase KC for the department nearly six years ago. After training, KC was partners with Officer Gabe Shinn for five years.

Officers thanked the Kiwanis Club for the years KC had served with them.

RIP KC

I salute you KC, like all of your law enforcement brethren for the work you do.

Officer Shinn-I'm really sorry. KC was not only your partner, but faithful friend. I know he has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and he's not suffering anymore. God bless.

Thank you KC, you are awesome !!!!

I lost my beloved 12 year old collie, Desdemona, to cancer a little over 2 years ago. It's tough to lose a friend, but bringing in another furry one helps. My youngest collie, Dakota, drives me crazy at times and he is the polar opposite of Desi but he is a sweetheart.
