The world-renowned Tuskegee University Golden Voices Choir will perform in Raleigh and Durham as part of their spring tour.

The choir's repertoire contains a number of spirituals that "share the beauty and message of faith, determination of hope," choir director Dr. Wayne Barr said. Other features include works by Roland Carter, James Furman, Randall Thompson, C. Hubert H. Parry and Dawson.

The choir traces its beginnings to the late 1800s, barely a generation after the end of slavery. Tuskegee students sang spirituals at weekly services in the university's chapel, Barr said.

"Today, we sing so that these ancestors would not have believed and hoped in vain. We remember their pain, their sacrifice and vow to see their hopes fulfilled," Barr continued.

When not touring, the choir sings at various functions at Tuskegee – including campus worship services.
