Raleigh, N.C. — The former pharmacy director at UNC Hospitals has reimbursed almost $2,400 to the hospital system and the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy in after a state audit revealed a pattern of double-billing.

James C. McAllister III was demoted a day after the State Auditor's Office announced last June that he had been reimbursed for travel and cell phone expenses for his family and that both the hospital and UNC repaid him for a business trip to Miami.

A note in a follow-up report issued Thursday by the State Auditor's Office indicates that McAllister no longer works for UNC Hospitals.

UNC Hospitals and the School of Pharmacy have started using a checklist for dual employees, including requiring them to sign a statement that they haven't requested reimbursements previously for expenses, according to the follow-up report.

“I’m pleased with UNC Hospitals’ and the Pharmacy School’s implementation of our recommendations,” State Auditor Leslie Merritt said in a statement. “I believe that by implementing (our) recommendations, they’ve gone a long way in showing that they are serious stewards of taxpayer money.”
