Four people were killed and one severely injured Thursday when their vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a logging truck along U.S. 158 west of Winton.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened about 1:15 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 158 west of the town of Winton.

Kris Marlow Outlaw, 35, of Windsor, was traveling westbound on U.S. 158 when the car swerved into his path, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol. Trooper report that Outlaw tried to brake and steered to the shoulder in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the passenger vehicle. The truck continued off the roadway to the right and struck several trees in the woods, where it came to rest.

Outlaw reported an injury but was not transported for treatment. He is not expected to be charged.

Of the five people in the car, only one survived. Zanyiah Burke, 3, was "fighting for her life" at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, according to a state trooper.

The driver, McKenzie Hart, 19, of Woodland, and three passengers -- Trarica Burke, 21, Zaiveyon Burke, 1, and Zamarius Burke, 5 months, were killed.

This happend a few miles down the road from where I live. Its such a terrible thing. My husband is on the Vol.Fire dept that responded and he said it was the worst he'd ever seen. The log truck basicly peeled the roof right off of the car. When EMS got they heard the 3 yr old crying. Its amazing that this little girl has survived such a horrific accident. She underwent emergency surgery as soon as she go to Pitt. She is in critical conditon right now. We all just need to say an extra prayer for the little girl and her family.

So young, so sad!!!

Praying for the wee one still fighting for her life - may she survive to live long and flourish.

God bless.
