Fayetteville, N.C. — Police used a reverse 911 system to call residents Thursday night to warn them about a suspected serial rapist in the northern Ramsey Street area.

The pre-recorded message went out between 5 and 7:30 p.m. and repeated a warning about a man police believe committed three rapes in the area between August 2006 and February 2008.

The message sent Thursday described the suspect as a white or Hispanic man in early 20s to early 30s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall. He has short, possibly shaved hair and an athletic build.

The reverse 911 system allows the city to select a geographical area and contact residents by phone about important information or emergency situations.

The system uses the Embarq database and dials only listed Embarq numbers. Individuals with unlisted numbers, cell phones and other carriers may not receive the recorded message.

Police will analyze the effectiveness of the calling system after the messages are sent out Thursday night.
