Recalled meat will be picked up from the Wake County Public Schools warehouse Thursday by the N.C. Department of Agriculture.

The meat is part of a nationwide recall of beef from a a Southern California slaughterhouse that is the subject of an animal-abuse investigation.

The Wake County school system received about 35,000 pounds of the recalled beef, spokesman Bill Poston said Monday. None of it was served to students, he said.

Recalled beef also turned up in Johnston and Orange counties, but no illnesses have been reported.

It doesn't take massive factory-wide failures to initiate a recall. Even if the video only shows a few animals, it's not a stretch to imagine that it's a facility-wide attitude towards animal treatment, sanitation, etc. And, as to why they're buying meat from across the country, that's factory farming for you...it makes it cheaper, even if it has to be shipped 3000 miles. Most people in the grocery store buy based on price, not on top quality, organic, locally-grown, etc.

An animal abuse investigation should not constitute a recall of this magnitude. This is ridiculous. The taken vidieo showed a maybe just one possibly a couple of 'downed' animals. There were probably 50 to 100 thousand or maybe 1/2 million at this facility. The 'prepared' meat has no chance of giving any one anything. Ground meat does have more of a consistancy for bacteria because it is 'ground' and blended with different cuts and fat. This in no way constitutes any significant value that something is wrong at this plant. If you believe this story don't go through the drive thru at Bojangles, Mcdonalds, Hardees, Burger King, Wendy's, Bisuit Ville, or any other place you frequent while you are rushing to work or lunch or trying to get dinner.

Why is Wake County buying processed meat all the way from California? Wouldn't it makes better sense to buy locally?
