Hillsborough, N.C. — An Orange County Board of Education member resigned his seat Monday and was charged Tuesday with embezzlement.
Dennis Whitling has been charged with obtaining property by false pretense, corporate malfeasance and obstruction of justice. The charges stem from the theft of $115,000 from a Durham law firm, police said.

Orange County school officials said there are no plans to fill Whitling's seat before the May election.
