Aycock High Moves Classes After Oil Spill

A fuel spill was discovered at Wayne County's Charles B. Aycock High School Monday.

When students returned Tuesday after the President's Day holiday, physical education classes were temporarily moved to the old gym, and offices near the boiler room were ventilated.

Danny Langley, WCPS director of maintenance, said the school system is working with the EPA to ensure all appropriate steps are taken in the cleanup.

“Emergency services, HAZMAT, and the EPA were called in on Monday to access the spill and assist with identifying cleanup measures. We believe approximately 300 gallons spilled out of the tank. Crews were able to recover 173 gallons, but the rest was absorbed into the soil outside of the boiler room or went down a storm drain,” Langley said.
