Wake County firefighters were dispatched Tuesday morning to investigate reports of smoke rising above the University Towers at N.C. State University.

The towers, at Friendly Drive and Hillsborough Street, are student housing.

Once on the scene, firefighters determined that it was merely steam coming from the building and that there was no fire danger.

Wait a minute... they just now realized that steam rises from UT on cold days? I lived in Sullivan Hall (with a clear view across the train tracks to UT) from 1989 through 1992, and steam always came out of the top of UT even back then.

Better safe than sorry, I suppose, but you think people would have noticed it before now.

And yes (to the above comments), it did look that it was at least 3 fire departments because the trucks arrived from 3 different directions to campus.

I was wondering what happened! 3+ fire trucks BLEW through Hillsborough Street, an ambulance, fire chief, and multiple RPD at the change of classes. It was actually REALLY alarming considering what's been taking place on university campuses over the past year!

This Wolfpacker is MORE THAN GLAD to hear that it wasn't something tragic and to see in person that the response by our emergency officials was taken very seriously and in what I'd imagine was record time.

Yea that would be Raleigh station 5, 8, and 1 most likely.

Correction to the story, that would be "city firefighters" were dispatched to U.T.
