Wreck Caused Traffic Delays on U.S. Highway 1

A wreck in Lee County caused traffic delays on U.S. Highway 1 near the intersection of N.C. Highway 78 Tuesday morning.

At about 11:30 p.m. Monday, a tractor-trailer and street-sweeper collided near Pendergrass Road. The accident caused traffic on northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 to halt.

The street-sweeper also blocked southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 for a while.

Street-sweeper driver Daniel Lett, 21, and passenger Matthew Gates, 23, were transported by helicopter to UNC Hospitals. Paramedics reported finding the two men dozens of feet from the street-sweeper, apparently ejected by the force of the crash.

According to a family member, Lett was in critical but stable condition Tuesday afternoon. Gates is in good condition.

Tractor-trailer driver Travis Scott, 31, of Candor, was taken to the hospital by his wife. His injuries were considered not life-threatening.

Charges are pending against Lett, troopers said.

This is a very bad area! Wasn't long ago someone was killed at the intersection there.

Again, speed is involved. If the vehicle was going 60 at that point, it was speeding. Ironic that the Highway Patrol station is within 200 yards of the accident location.

I was wondering what in the world had happened. Its right near tramway intersection in front of the radio station. I was riding bye sometime after it happened and it looked kinda like a huge washing machine had exploded or sumthing in the right lane. All i saw was white stuff all over the lane like suds or foam that firefighters use.
