An accident left a pedestrian dead and closed part of Wade Avenue on Monday afternoon, police said.

Avery Preston Byrd, 23, of Pittsboro, was walking on the shoulder of Wade Avenue, off a merge lane from Interstate 440, around 3:40 p.m.

Byrd darted out into the road and struck the side of a passing car driven by Edward Graham Holmes, 58, of Franklinton, according to the police report. The car was traveling at 50 mph then.

Byrd was taken to WakeMed, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident report did not indicate any fault on the part of Holmes.

The car involved in the accident was owned by the North Carolina Department of Administration.

Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction between Blue Ridge Road and the Interstate 440 Beltline, police said. There was no word on when the other lanes would be reopened.
