Lillington — The Harnett County Public Utilities Department plans to temporarily stop adding ammonia to its water treatment disinfection process, according to Water Treatment Plant Supervisor Allan O’Briant.
The change, which is mandatory under a state policy that governs the operation, will begin March 1. Ammonia will be added again beginning on March 31.
Ammonia helps reduce the amount of byproducts that are formed when water is disinfected with chlorine.
Water customers affected by the change include people who pay water bills to Harnett County Public Utilities as well as those who pay bills to Lillington, Angier, Coats, Linden, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Spring Lake, Moore County Public Utilities — Vass, East Moore Water District, and Aqua.
Customers with questions can contact O’Briant at 910-893-7575, ext. 3238.
