Cary Panel to Study Reassignment Impact

e-mail print friendly

Parents and school groups upset about repeated Wake County school reassignments convinced the Cary Town Council on Thursday to set up a task force to study the impact of shifting students.

The task force will meet with Wake County Board of Education members during a three-month period, although no dates have been set for the meetings. The Town Council also considered hiring a private consultant to study the issue and offer alternatives to reassignment.

Hopefully this task force will actually be able to give the BoE some options OTHER than busing students across the county. There is no reason to bus the kids around, because you're CLEARLY not busing them to promote socioeconomic diversity -- if you were, there would not be some schools in this county with 10% on free/reduced lunch (and parents griping because the percentages are going from 7% to 12% with this current reassignment plan) and other schools in the county (Garner, east Raleigh/Knightdale area) with *70%* on free/reduced lunch.

Way to go Cary for being willing to pay for a study like this, and here's hoping it benefits ALL the parents in the county. I really miss the days of neighborhood schools -- I walked to my elementary.

The Town of Cary should break away from the Wake County School District. There are more than enough people in Cary to support their own schools and it would reduce the busing of Cary students outside of the town.
