Orange county bans open burning

e-mail print friendly

Authorities in Orange County on Friday reinstituted an outdoor burning ban.

A burning ban by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources prohibits open burning 100 feet or more from an occupied dwelling, and the county ban covers open burning regardless of the distance from a structure.

The rash of wildfires across the state last weekend, along with a diminished water supply due to the drought prompted the county to ban all open burning.

Jacob Pressley, Orange County Forest Ranger, also expressed concerns for homes next to woodlands.

“Homeowners should use extra precaution in removing combustible materials next to their house,” Pressley said.

Firewood, pine straw, leaves, dead limbs and other combustible materials should be moved 30 feet or more away from the structure.

Have not seen one fire started by someone burning in their back yard. Not one. The fires you see are caused by arson, lightning, idigent campfires, or other.

The ground is wet, perfect time for burning. I may burn this weekend!

tossed cigarette's cause fires too!

I see "stupid people" everyday throwing cigarette's out of their vehicles windows. They "cigarette's" start fires too! Think people, THINK!

Who in their right mind would even think about lighting a fire outside with the water situation the way it is now? Let the leaves blow into the neighbors yard or rake them (the leaves) up and put the in trash bags or start a compost heap. Egad, what does it take to get across to people that a drought + wind + dry leaves make a poor situation.
