Sanford, N.C. — Sanford police are investigating an off-campus shooting near Lee County High School Thursday morning.
A ninth-grade student was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment, school officials said.
In a news release, the Lee County School System said the shooting appeared to be accidental.
Lee County High School and Bragg Street Academy were placed on alert, but operations continued on a normal schedule after law enforcement officers determined there was no risk to students at either campus.
It was unclear whether charges would be filed or if anyone was arrested.
