Durham, Pender impose outdoor burning bans

e-mail print friendly

The Durham County and Pender County fire marshal's offices Thursday imposed bans on any outside burning anywhere in the counties.

The actions came a day after Gov. Mike Easley reinstituted a state burning ban that had been lifted Jan. 2.

"All burning, no matter how close or far away from an occupied dwelling, is strictly prohibited in Durham County. This ban ... will remain in effect until further notice," Durham Fire Marshal Jeff Batten said in an announcement of the Durham rule.

The state ban covers areas more than 100 feet from occupied dwellings. Local officials control what happens closer than that.
