A Harrier jet flying from Cherry Point crashed in Carteret County Wednesday afternoon, a Cherry Point official said.

The pilot ejected safely, and officials said it is unlikely anyone on the ground was hurt. The crash occurred outside Beaufort near U.S. Highway 70.

The AV-8B Harrier was one of three aircraft on a training flight when it lost engine power. The other two aircraft returned safely to Cherry Point, officials said.

The pilot and jet were assigned to HMM-365, a Marine medium-helicopter squadron, officials said. The squadron is part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and is training to deploy to Afghanistan within the next couple of months.

The cause of the mishap is currently under investigation.

The last time a Harrier jet crashed in North Carolina was three years ago. The jet went down in a wooded area of Pamlico County, and no one was hurt.

Hmmm...Didn't know there was a controversy over the Harrier jet. Are your facts straight?

Looks like all this contraversy over the Harrier Jet will solve itself once they all crash . . .

Very glad everything turned out for the Pilot.
