Rail Line Upgraded From Raleigh to Cary

e-mail print friendly

The state Department of Transportation recently completed a $7 million project to increase train speeds between downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary, officials said.

New signals were installed to increase the railroad’s capacity and flexibility, allowing trains to move more efficiently in each direction on each track. The signal system uses cutting-edge technology and provides a cost-effective capacity improvement, officials said.

Upgraded track work also will allow passenger train speeds to increase from 60 to 79 mph, which will improve train reliability, officials said.

Other planned improvements along the corridor include work on the junction at Cary, the bridge over East Durham Road and sections of track work along the corridor.

NC DOT wants to improve speeds for the Carolinian and Piedmont trains, for the high speed rail corridor, and to eventually add commuter rail service from Clayton to Burlington/Greensboro. This is outside of anything TTA is doing. This has nothing to do with passengers going from Cary to Raleigh, but from Charlotte to DC and points north.

The improvements also helps the freight trains, which pay to use the tracks too.

Selling the tracks to CSX would be a short term gain and a long term loss. While we're at it, should we sell the existing part of 540 to a private turnpike company?

The state should sell all of the tracks to CSX and the like. We don't need to be in the railroad business.

WOW 7 mill to upgrade tracks of what 20 to 30 miles. Sounds like TTA may have had a hand in this upgrade for thier light rail plans. Where did this 7 mill come from???? WHose tax dollars paid for this, what pot did it come out of????? How much does the rail system contribute to DOT? Just sounds like the tax payer may just as well said BOHICA and be done with it.

twc, there are roads all over the place, running next to and intersecting the tracks. As for the reasons cars don't run on "tracks", do we really need to explain this?

Have they considered making the "tracks" so that trains or other vehicle types could use them. That way a smaller vehicle could be used on occasions where the train was overkill. Like late at night or holidays or other occasion when there's not many passengers.

Has anyone considered a roadway similar to the railway but without tracks. Seems to me that it would be much more flexible!
