Cary, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation recently completed a $7 million project to increase train speeds between downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary, officials said.
New signals were installed to increase the railroad’s capacity and flexibility, allowing trains to move more efficiently in each direction on each track. The signal system uses cutting-edge technology and provides a cost-effective capacity improvement, officials said.
Upgraded track work also will allow passenger train speeds to increase from 60 to 79 mph, which will improve train reliability, officials said.
Other planned improvements along the corridor include work on the junction at Cary, the bridge over East Durham Road and sections of track work along the corridor.

The improvements also helps the freight trains, which pay to use the tracks too.
Selling the tracks to CSX would be a short term gain and a long term loss. While we're at it, should we sell the existing part of 540 to a private turnpike company?

Has anyone considered a roadway similar to the railway but without tracks. Seems to me that it would be much more flexible!
