Site SearchRaleigh, N.C. — North Carolina on Monday took its first official step toward the November election with the opening of candidate filing.
Candidates for offices from governor to county commissioner filed paperwork Monday as elections officials statewide began accepting applictions at noon for the 2008 ballot. The filing period will remain open until Feb. 29.
Nearly 50 candidates had filed for statewide, congressional and judicial seats at the State Board of Elections in Raleigh in the first hour of the filing period. Among them: incumbents Congressmen Bob Etheridge and Brad Miller, and state Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry.
Republican gubernatorial candidates Fred Smith and Elbie Powers also signed up for the race. Candidates for state legislative and local offices filed at the election board office in their home county.
Primary elections are set for May 6, with the general election is November 4.
