Raleigh, N.C. — The state Division of Forest Resources on Friday warned people to avoid debris burning this weekend because of predictions of dry and windy weather.
The National Weather Service has called for the possibility of a red flag warning this weekend because of high winds and low humidity. Red flag warnings call attention to weather conditions that may result in very dangerous burning conditions.
Despite the ongoing drought statewide, officials lifted an outdoor burning ban in North Carolina last month.
Careless burning of debris accounts for more than 40 percent of the wildfires in North Carolina, more than any other cause, officials said.
