A man serving 19 years in prison on a statutory rape conviction now faces a murder charge in the death of a fellow inmate.

Edward Curk Wiley, 25, was charged with first-degree murder following the stabbing death of Gary N. Bell, 41, according to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office.

Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree said Wiley confessed to the killing. Charges against additional inmates are expected to be filed soon, he said.

Authorities said "an edged weapon" was used in the stabbing, but they did not say what started the altercation between the two inmates.

Bell was serving a 12-year sentence based on a Sampson County conviction as a habitual felon in 2002.

He had numerous convictions in Sampson County, including breaking and entering, assault on a police officer, larceny and driving while impaired, according to Department of Correction records.

I wonder if these guys dropped out of high school?

Is tab's comment about 1 guard to 15-20 inmates correct? If so, prisons have a better ratio than schools!

The ratio that I had when I was a CO was 68 to 1 and I was locked down in the dorms with them alone a night. The only way I could leave the dorm is if the control officer or the yard officer unlocked the door. So those of you who don't think the CO's are doing their job, try it for 1 day and see if you can see everything that is going on. It is best that folks that have never walked in their shoes keep their comments to themselves.

Stay out of prison to begin with and you won't need to be protected by the guards. As far as "not respecting the deceased" is concerned, in my opinion that is the only person who SHOULD be discussed.

Go back to tragedies like Virginia Tech and Columbine, if we would stop giving these animals their 15 minutes of fame and ONLY discuss the tragic loss of life, perhaps some of the insanity would stop. The killers names should merely be a footnote in the story. I'm sorry that he was picked on as a child and if his Mother didn't love him, that doesn't give him the right to take another person's life.

SOLUTION...NO 15 minutes of fame! NO insanity pleas! And if guilty beyond all resonable doubt...DEATH PENALTY to be carried out immediately. Your victims didn't have time to plan for their deaths and neither should you!

They should just give them all weapons and let them kill each other. Maybe THAT would be enough of a deterrant to keep people from committing crimes on the outside. Instead prison is like a vacation/promotion for criminals because they come out with more "rep" with their homies and probably learned something to boot.
