A Scotland Correction Institution inmate died Tuesday afternoon in a stabbing inside the prison, state correction officials said.

Gary N. Bell, 41, died from multiple stab wounds to his chest, DOC spokesman Keith Acree said.

Scotland County sheriff's deputies and the State Bureau of Investigation were looking into the killing, Acree said.

Bell was serving a 12-year sentence based on a Sampson County conviction as a habitual felon in 2002. He had numerous convictions in Sampson County, including breaking and entering, assault on a police officer, larceny and driving while impaired, according to Department of Correction records.

If you have never worked inside a prison facility, it is hard to understand the day to day operation. Inmates have a lot of free time to plan and scheme, and that's exactly what they do.

While it may be true that he did not deserve to die, he could have made other choices with his life that would have kept him out of there in the first place

I agree that this man did not deserved to be murdered, but at the same time the Correctional Officers can not be everywhere and see everything all the time. I know when I eas a CO, I was "locked down" in the dorms with 68 inmates and there is no way that I could watch all 68 at one time. Everyone wants the inmates protected, then they should agree to pay more taxes so the state can hire more Correctional Officers. As long as there is a 68 to 1 ratio, they will never be totally protected. So please pray for these inmates safety and at the same time think about that 1 CO that has to be responsible for all those convicted felons (murderers, rapists and child molesters) and hope they (the inmates) will let that CO go home to their familes when their 12 hour shift is over.

Nobody judged this guy except the judge (who put him in prison) and the killer. The killer will be judged by a judge (at least another year added to his sentence) and God.

He didn't ask to be murdered in prison. I don't have much sympathy for prisoners, but it's bad enough they have to be there (I know, I know, they PUT themselves there...) But the system should be able to protect them while they pay their debt to society. That's my take anyway. Prisons are supposed to be organized, not places of anarchy.
