e-mail print friendly

An elementary school student in Vance County faces a lengthy suspension after bringing a handgun to school.

Sheriff's deputies confiscated the gun that a 10-year-old brought to Zeb Vance Elementary School in Kitrell.

The student already has been suspended for a minimum of 10 days.

Another student reported the incident several days after the child brought the gun to school.

It's unclear whether the child or any family members will face charges.

This is 99 percent the parent's fault. Allowing a child to have access to a pistol is criminal.

Kids who do this are trouble brewing. It starts small and escallates. You may say, "it's only a pellet gun" but the intent is there to intimidate and/or cause injury-whether fatal or not doesn't matter. This is a SERIOUS crime and should be punished harshly. In Wake County the rule is (supposed to be, though not always followed) 1 year mandatory suspension. I think this if fair. The parents should be held responsible as well.

One of his parents should be sentenced to community service. Maybe the service could be related to his/her child's school.

Guns whether real or fake are not allowed on school grounds period. This child does need to have a lengthy suspension. I have a 9 year old son and he knows what kind of trouble he would get into if he brought any of his b.b.guns, pellet guns, airsoft guns, paintball guns or whatever to school.

As for pellet guns there is a big warning on them that they can be lethal- this warning is not on B.B.guns or other types of "toy" guns.

A water pistol can get a child suspended for a year? What is this country coming to?
