Chapel Hill Man Faces Murder Charge in Carrboro Slaying

Police said Tuesday that they had charged a Chapel Hill man with murder in a shooting Monday night outside a Food Lion grocery store.

James Kenneth Imonti, 59, of Carrboro, died at UNC Hospitals, where Orange County EMS crews rushed him after he was shot once in the back, police said. They charged Garland Mcray King Jr., 65, after arresting him without incident at the shooting scene in the parking lot outside the store at Carrboro Plaza on N.C. Highway 54 West.

Police said they believe that Imonti was King's son-in-law and that the two had been having a dispute for some time. Initial reports were that the two argued in the parking lot, police said.

 King was arraigned in Orange County court in Hillsborough and held without bond. he was assigned a public defender, and his next court apperance is scheduled for Feb. 4.
