An Arkansas native based at Fort Bragg died Tuesday while serving as a civil affairs specialist in Kirkuk, Iraq, the military announced.

Sgt. Michael R. Sturdivant, 20, of Conway, Ark., had been injured in a vehicle accident during a convoy operation. The Army Reserve soldier was on his first overseas deployment, officials said.

Sturdivant was assigned to the 431st Civil Affairs Battalion, U.S. Army Civil Affairs & Psychological Operations Command (Airborne), based at Ft. Bragg.

He joined the Army Reserves in March 2005 and was called to active duty and deployed in November 2006.

Sturdivant was survived by his parents, Victor and Cheryl, of Bonner, Mont.
