Laurinburg, N.C. — A 4-year-old girl was killed early Thursday in a house fire in Scotland County, police said.
A Laurinburg woman was home with her two grandchildren when the fire started at about 1:30 a.m., police said. She was awakened by the sounds of the fire and grabbed her 1-year-old grandchild while trying to flee the house, police said.
The woman tried to get to the girl as well, but the house was fully engulfed in flames, police said.
The State Bureau of Investigation was working with local authorities to determine the cause of the fire.
