Special Forces Soldier Dies During Training Exercise

e-mail print friendly

A Fort Bragg soldier died Wednesday in a parachute accident during a training exercise at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, authorities said.

The name of the soldier, a member of the Special Forces, wasn't released, pending notification of relatives.

The accident happened during HALO — high-altitude, low-opening — training. Soldiers learn in the exercises to jump from very high altitudes and wait until they are close to the ground to open their parachutes so that they can evade detection by enemies.

Special Forces officials said there are no plans to suspend future HALO jumps while the fatal incident is investigated.

My prayers are out to his family and friends for their loss. This is demanding and dangerous training. It was in the soldier's heart to be involved in this. You don't make it that far if it is not. Thank you for your service! God Bless All of the Troops!!

My sympathies to his family and friends. Such a sad thing to have happen.

Quick at least......It must take some nerve to jump out of a perfectly servicable aircraft.......tougher than I.

Training is very dangerous. 100's lost each year in training accidents. It's the nature of the work though. Safety is emphasized regularly but in spite of best efforts these things happen.

god bless him and his fmaily - such a hard story to read...lost some sailors down in Texas during training this week, too....
