A Pittsboro man used a headstone to break into a Methodist church and then stole nearly $1,500 worth of electronic equipment, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Kyle Evan Kettry, 22, of 150-C Morris Lane, removed a headstone from a grave at Chatham United Methodist Church, 1826 Chatham Church Road, on Jan. 12. Kettry used the headstone to break into the church's sanctuary and reception hall, causing $3,000 worth of damage to the building, deputies said.

He stole a flat-screen TV and DVD player, officials said.

Deputies arrested Kettry on five felony charges: two counts of of breaking and entering and one count each of larceny, injury to personal property and possession of stolen property. He also faced misdemeanor charges for defacing a grave and possession of stolen property.

Kettry was being held in the Orange County Jail. His first court appearance was set for Jan. 30.
