Smithfield, N.C. — A pedestrian was hit and killed Friday evening by a freight train in Smithfield, authorities said.
A CSX train was northbound on tracks at the dead end of Fuller Street shortly before 7 p.m. when it struck a man crossing or walking along the tracks.
Alonzo Ray Brockington, 32, of Clayton died at the scene, officials said.
Smithfield police said they were investigating why Brockington was on the tracks.
