Sanford, N.C. — An accident between a pickup truck and an Amtrak train in Sanford sent one man to the hospital Thursday night, authorities said.
A man in a pickup truck drove around a gate at crossing at South Moore and McIver streets in downtown Sanford shortly after 10 p.m., Renee Graham, an Amtrak official, said. The pickup truck hit the New York-to-Miami train.
The pickup truck driver suffered severe injuries and had to be taken to a local hospital, Sanford police said. An emergency medical helicopter could not fly due to weather, so emergency responders were forced to transport the man by ambulance.
None of the 187 passengers or crew on board the train were injured, Graham said.
An inspection of the train revealed only minor damage to the front, and Amtrak officials planned to continue the journey as soon as law-enforcement officials gave the train permission to leave.
Passengers were on boad the train, sitting on the tracks, waiting to continue around 11:30 p.m.
