Fayetteville, N.C. — A Sanford woman was sentenced Thursday to 30 days in jail for a drunken driving accident last spring that killed her best friend.
Danielle Polumbo, 21, pleaded guilty to felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, driving after consuming alcohol while underage and reckless driving.
Polumbo's car struck a pole at the intersection of Bragg Boulevard and Sycamore Dairy Road in Fayetteville on May 17, police said. A red-light camera mounted on the pole fell off and crushed the roof of the passenger side of the car, police said.
Emily May, 24, died from her injuries after the camera fell on top of where she was sitting, police said.
Polumbo was sentenced to 20 to 24 months in prison, suspended to 30 days in jail and three years on probation. She also was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine. Her driver's license remains suspended.
