A sheep that gained fame last fall after it was stolen from the birthplace of former Gov. Charles B. Aycock has given birth to two lambs.

Annabelle was taken from the Gov. Charles B. Aycock Birthplace historic site in northern Wayne County on Oct. 28. The animal was located three days later on private property on the other side of the county.

David Allen Smith, 45, of 341 Bartlett Road in Pikeville, was charged with felony pursuing or injuring livestock with intent to steal or convert to personal use.

Authorities said Annabelle was the third sheep stolen from the historic site within a year. They said they believed the animal was destined for the dinner table but that extensive publicity about the theft saved its life.

The two lambs, named Rocky and Bullwinkle, were born Dec. 18, officials said.
