Franklin County deputies detained a suspect charged with attempted murder after a stabbing that occurred in Halifax County on Sunday.

Officials alleged that Christopher Charles Gupton, 22, of 1112 W. River Road, Louisburg, was involved in a dispute with another man over a woman. Gupton stabbed the male victim six times in his face and elsewhere on his body, authorities said.

The victim was taken to Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg and then airlifted to WakeMed in Raleigh. He was listed in critical condition on Monday morning, authorities said.

Franklin County deputies found the victim on Sunday, detained a suspect and requested assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff's Office after determining that the assault occurred in that county.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation and said the assault occurred in the Hollister area.

Gupton was being held in the Halifax County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Feb. 6 in the city of Halifax.
