A Fayetteville City Council member has dropped his proposal that all members of the council be tested for drugs.

Councilman Charles Evans said two weeks ago that elected officials should submit to drug tests because all other city employees do so. But he said he lacked the support on the council that he would need to pursue the idea.

Evans pleaded guilty to embezzlement and felony cocaine possession in 1992. He said he committed the crimes because he was addicted to drugs and alcohol. He said he's been clean of everything since December 2001, before he was elected to council.
