No Charges Against Mother in Fatal Fire

Laurinburg Fire

Criminal charges won't be filed against the mother of four children killed in a September house fire in Scotland County, authorities said Thursday.

The Sept. 23 fire at a modular home off U.S. Highway 501 in Laurinburg killed 12-year-old Rasheem Williams, 10-year-old Jadeda Williams, 9-year-old Devon Williams and 3-year-old Brian Williams.

Authorities said the children were home alone and were likely asleep when the fire started in the kitchen. Their mother, Lauvina Williams, was across town at a friend's house.

The children died of smoke inhalation.

Investigators determined that a pot left unattended on a stove overheated and sparked the fire. Because the fire was accidental, Scotland County District Attorney Kristy Newton and Scotland County Sheriff Sheppard Jones said Thursday that they determined that no criminal charges would be filed against Lauvina Williams.
