Durham, N.C. — A man was killed Monday evening when he was struck by a car on the Durham Freeway.
Police said Juan Jose Landeros Pineda, 20, of South LaSalle St. was driving when he had a tire blowout. He stopped his car in the far right southbound lane of the Durham Freeway near the Swift Avenue exit.
Pineda was standing behind his Ford Mustang when he was struck by a BMW at about 6:15 p.m., authorities said.
Investigators said Harold Crockett Pillsbury, 59, of Chapel Hill was apparently trying to merge into the next lane when the accident happened.
Pineda was pronounced dead at the scene. Pillsbury was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The accident was still under investigation Monday night and no charges had been filed. The accident backed up traffic for about two hours.
