9 Injured in Wreck on Highway 70

Highway 70

Nine people were injured early Thursday morning in a wreck in Johnston County, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Trooper P.K. Watkins said a 1992 white Toyota Camry was traveling the wrong way on an eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 70 when it collided head-on with a Tidewater Transport tanker driven by William Wadsworth, 56, of LaGrange.

The Camry later collided with a minivan driven by Dwayne Fryar, 28, of Durham. Fryar's minivan had six passengers.

The 18-wheeler was carrying diesel fuel; about 60 gallons spilled from its saddle tanks, troopers said.

The driver of the Camry, who has not been identified, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals, the state Highway Patrol said. There is no word on his condition.

Seven people in the minivan and the tanker driver were taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital, where most have been treated and released.

Both directions of U.S. Highway 70 near Selma were shut down at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. All lanes were reopened by 2:15 a.m.
