Police Try to ID Jogger Killed in Cary Accident

cary jogger

Cary police are trying to identify a woman who died from her injuries when a car hit her while she was jogging.

The woman was struck near the intersection of Reedy Creek Road and Dynasty Drive shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Police said she was hit from behind, and the driver immediately stopped to call for police and paramedics.

The woman never regained consciousness and died at the hospital, police said. She wasn't carrying identification.

“At this time, we have no identification on her. We've worked for approximately 24 hours running down leads,” said Lt. Mark Parker of the Cary Police Department.

The woman was described as being Hispanic or Indian. She had black hair and stood about 5 feet, 4 inches tall. She was wearing a lime green top, blue jogging pants and blue-and-white athletic shoes. She was also wearing one pink sock and one white sock.

"We're asking if anybody has someone who perhaps didn't come to work today or something, if they could call us if they feel like it could have been her that was injured," Lt. Parker said.

"When you have something as tragic as this, it makes us much more aware that these things can happen to us and we're lucky in many respects," Mike Waldvogel, with the North Carolina Road Runners Club, said.

Waldvogel said a description of the jogger was posted on the Road Runners Club Web site with the hope that someone knew her. He said the accident was a reminder that runners should always put safety first.

"The rule of thumb is you run against the flow of traffic, whereas we tend to ride with the flow of traffic because you want to be able to watch the cars, see if they make any sudden moves," Waldvogel said.

Waldvogel also advises people to run on sidewalks or greenways, to run with a friend, and to always carry identification.

Police will not charge the driver who hit the woman. They said speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident.

Authorities were working on a sketch of the woman to distribute to the public. Anyone who can help identify the jogger was asked to call the Cary Police Department at 919-469-4016.
