Fayetteville Man Charged In Fatal Shooting At VA Hospital

A Fayetteville man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a fatal shooting at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Fayetteville was sentenced to life in prison this week.

In April, Arthur James Charland admitted to killing his girlfriend, Linda Faye Owens, on Dec. 12, 2005, at the hospital pharmacy, where she worked as a pharmacist.

Investigators said he concealed a shotgun inside Christmas wrapping paper to get the weapon into the hospital.

Charland, a pharmacy technician, told authorities that he had been dating Owens for 11 years and that she wanted to end the relationship.

He also said he stopped taking medication for bipolar disorder before the shooting.
