About 6,000 New Students in Wake Schools

e-mail print friendly

The Wake County school system added almost 6,000 students this year, well below earlier projections by district administrators.

The district released its 10th-day enrollment figures late Monday, showing 133,715 students in area schools. That was 5,948 more students than the 127,767 who attended the 10th day of school a year ago.

The district had 65,458 elementary school students, 29,938 middle school students and 38,319 high school students on Monday.

The district converted 22 elementary and middle schools from traditional schedules to year-round calendars this fall to accommodate the influx of new students. Officials had expected about 8,000 new students this year.

District spokesman Bill Poston said the projection covered the entire year, and he said enrollment growth could eventually surpass the 8,000-student estimate.

District administrators said they are awaiting further reports from year-round schools in the coming days to finalize enrollment numbers to send to the state to determine funding for the year.
