Durham, N.C. — A Durham police officer was injured Friday afternoon while trying to arrest a man on drug charges on Mordecai Street near Morreene Road, police said.

The officer, C.D. Burroughs of the Gang Unit, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of a serious leg injury, police said.

Officers arrested Jamel Kendu Perry, 24, about an hour later in a drain pipe under Morreene Road.

Perry was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, trespassing and resisting, delaying and obstructing a government official. He was also arrested on an old warrant for failing to appear on earlier charges.

Burroughs was injured after he approached Perry. The officer believed Perry was in possession of drugs on a second-floor balcony of an apartment building at 3309 Mordecai St. at about 4:30 p.m.

Perry allegedly shoved Burroughs down a flight of stairs and fled, police said.

Officers and police K-9s searched the area and found Perry hiding in the drain pipe.
