Raleigh, N.C. — Lawn watering is keeping code enforcers busy as Raleigh continues to impose water-use restrictions.

Since the restrictions went into effect in early July, 444 residents have received warnings for first-time violations of the regulations.

Code enforcers also issued 19 citations for second-time violations, which carry a $50 fine, officials said. One person cited for the third time faces a $200 fine, authorities said.

For a fourth violation, the city retains the right to cut off a resident's water supply.

Late last week, Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker said the city might adopt stricter water limits as a drought lingers on. Water levels at Falls Lake, the city's primary water source, are 65 percent below normal and are dropping rapidly, city officials said.

The N.C. Drought Monitor classifies three-quarters of North Carolina counties as being in a severe or extreme drought.

Under the water restrictions, Raleigh residents can use lawn irrigation systems only three day a week. The days are assigned by odd- and even-numbered addresses.
