Myrtle Beach, S.C. — A 7-year-old boy was bitten in the leg by a shark while swimming just south of Myrtle Beach on Sunday.
The boy was playing in waist-deep water when the shark attacked him, said Sgt. Phillip Kane, a Beach Patrol officer in Myrtle Beach.
Bystanders had already controlled the bleeding by the time medics got to the scene, said Horry County Fire Rescue officials.
The boy underwent emergency surgery to his calf at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, officers said.
The injury appeared to be non-life-threatening and did not cause any tissue loss, fire officials said.
The attack occurred at Lakewood Campground, between Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach to the south.
