Report: Person County plant among nation's dirtiest

print friendly

Progress Energy's power plant in Person County is among the 50 dirtiest plants nationwide, according to a report released Thursday by an environmental group.

The Progress Energy plant at Hyco Lake is No. 25 on the list compiled by the Environmental Integrity Project. Duke Energy plants in Stokes County and Catawba County are ranked 28th and 46th on the list, respectively.

The "Dirty Kilowatts" rankings are based on the amount of pollution released by each plant.

Progress Energy officials said they have been installing technologies since the 1990s to reduce emissions from the Person plant. By 2013, the company expects to reduce emissions from its North Carolina plants by 80 percent, officials said.

Why should it take nearly twenty three years to complete such a project? Huuuuuh.

When you do a search on all 4 pollutants then the Person county plant is at 128 on the list. The data is there just how is WRAL and others sort it. And if environmental groups truly what the truth then they should be happy to highlight when a plant is working to reducing pollutants.

I think I am more worried about my processed foods coming in from China. We need labeling.

http://www.environmentalintegrity.org/ for those that do not know how to use a search engine. Instead of assuming the info is bogus, maybe we should pay attention and make sure our community is safe and even follow up to make sure Progress Energy is taking strides to reduce pollution.

Anyone can post anything on the web. My guess is the "Environmental Integrity Report" lacks its middle word. I don't know why WRAL posts such information anyway. Who is the author of this report, what research did WRAL do into the integrity of this report, none?
