Southern Pines, N.C. — A giant cedar tree on the site of a proposed restaurant in Southern Pines cannot be saved, according to the project's developer.
Cary-based MVOC plans to build a steakhouse where the tree stands.
Local residents have lobbied to save the tree, and the state Historic Preservation Office this week called the tree "historically significant."
But the company said it wouldn't change its plans to accommodate the tree. Developers plan to meet with the town's Historic District Commission next month to discuss what to do next.

You must live in metal-framed house. Otherwise, plenty of trees were cut down to build your house.
I still don't understand all the controversy over a danged tree. Don't get me wrong...trees are great. We can't live without them. But why all the hoopla over one particular tree? Whenever I fly, I love to look down and see all the trees. From that perspective, when you look down from the sky, you see trees everywhere. From that perspective, we have made very little impact on the environment. All the tree-hugging liberals have to do is look around...there are trees everywhere to hug.
